Review Quotes - Charlie & the Chocolate Factory

Highmore, who co-starred with Depp in “Finding Neverland,” is the movie’s strength. His naturalness, particularly in revealing Charlie’s basic decency, compensates for Depp’s artifice.
- Jeffrey Westhoff, Northwest Herald

As Charlie, Freddie Highmore needs to be the heart and soul of this bizarre little  story, and the kid does a wonderful job.
- Scott Weinberg, EFILMCRITIC.COM

Highmore is another reason to love Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. He gives Dakota Fanning a run for her money as best child actor working today as he fills Charlie with honest goodness and soul. You ache as he bravely accepts and deals with his family's poverty, and see rare childhood wonder in his eyes as he dreams about the chocolate factory or eats his only chocolate bar for the year as if it was gold (maybe even better than gold). Highmore builds the tension as he slowly, delicately and carefully opens that chocolate bar to look for the golden ticket. Then, we share in his disappointment or elation each time a major event affects his life. Of course, we are all going to see this movie for Johnny Depp.
- Willie Waffle, WAFFLEMOVIES.COM

Young Freddie Highmore excels as everyboy Charlie, who has no claim to fame except that he is a really nice kid who loves his family.
- Urban Cinefile Critics, URBAN CINEFILE

Freddie Highmore is perfect as Charlie - there's an impressive naturalism and maturity to his performance, which contrasts well with the madness around him.
- Matthew Turner, VIEWLONDON

Ordinary little Charlie Bucket (played by that sugar plum of a child actor, Freddy Highmore of Finding Neverland) only gets one candy bar a year -- on his birthday.
- Susan Tavernetti, PALO ALTO WEEKLY

Freddie Highmore is first-rate as Charlie.
- David Sterritt, CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MONITOR

And, of course, Freddie Highmore makes a wonderful Charlie, a kid we can all root for.
- Collin Souter, EFILMCRITIC.COM

Freddie Highmore, previously seen with Depp in "Finding Neverland," is a compelling little actor, with intelligent, expressive eyes and a face that absolutely radiates joy when his character is happy. You can see why Depp was so impressed with him after "Neverland" that he recommended him to Burton.
- Eric D. Snider, ERICDSNIDER.COM

In the title role, Freddie Highmore is pleasant. Wide-eyed and cheerful, Highmore brings credibility and humility to Charlie. And he does so in much the same way as he did in "Finding Neverland" - effortlessly.
- Mark Sells, OREGON HERALD

Freddie Highmore is an inspired choice for the unlikely Golden Ticket winner, and his English puppy dog demeanour does the film a world of good in the emotion department.
- Brian Orndorf, FILMJERK.COM

Freddie Highmore (Finding Neverland) is a heartbreakingly sweet and sincere boy who you earnestly want to win, not the amoral Zoom kid who Wilder chastises.
- Karina Montgomery, CINERINA

Freddie Highmore plays the boy hero, and once again we’re treated to a kid actor who’s both cute as a button, yet more than able to act on the same level as his adult co-stars.
- Sean McBride SEAN THE MOVIE GUY

Charlie is played by the incandescently cute Freddie Highmore, last seen teamed with Depp in "Finding Neverland," and one of the rare little movie angels you don't want to reach out and swat right off the screen.
- Kurt Loder, MTV

Highmore is impossibly sweet and precious as Charlie. At one point in the film, Grandpa Joe quietly states what a good boy Charlie is, and Highmore doesn’t disappoint. He portrays Charlie as the honest, family-oriented little boy that he is.
- Jeanne Kaplan, KAPLAN VS. KAPLAN

Freddie Highmore brings a likable sweetness and enthusiasm to Charlie, the young hero of the piece, whose innate nobility stands out all the more in contrast to fellow contest winners.
- Christine James, BOXOFFICE MAGAZINE

Besides the film looking great, the actors did a great job - especially Depp and Highmore, who worked together on last year’s hit FINDING NEVERLAND. I’ll reiterate that Highmore is a talent to keep your eye on. The kid will be like Mickey Rooney in delighting audiences for decades to come.
