Co-Star Quotes"Freddie [Highmore] is pretty impressive. The first thing that struck me about Freddie when I met him on "Finding Neverland" were his eyes. It wasn't just because they're these beautiful piercing blue eyes, but there's a purity in Freddie that is astonishing. It's mesmerizing, and it is like he's incapable of lying or telling a lie. Then you get to work with him and you see what his abilities are as an actor, which are endless. Beyond all of the great things that Freddie is, he wants to play football. He goes on vacations with his family, and he's just a really normal, very well grounded kid." Said by Johnny Depp (Thanks Siri) "You were so good in this movie (Finding Neverland). You're the best young actor ever." Said by Oprah Winfrey (Thanks Shawntae) "When there were scenes with Freddie, Kate and I just stood back and let him go. It's unbelievably compelling." Said by Johnny Depp "He has the most terrifying instincts, they're just bang-on. And he has no idea that he has that." Said by Kate Winslet "I did that on purpose because I felt when Kate and Johnny observe that child act, it will change their attitude towards working with him. I have never witnessed anything like it." Said by Marc Forster ('Finding Neverland' director) "I remember on the last day of the shoot, being with the boys, and especially Freddie [Highmore, who plays Peter] - my pal Freddie - we were sort of saying goodbye, see you later, and not able to look each other in the eye because you just start welling up. Especially something like this with little kids - emotions are sort of ricocheting all over the place. So it was really heavy." Said by Johnny Depp >"It was very rough. We had done about a dozen takes or something, with Freddie having to refuel and let go each time, and then we found out there had been a problem with the remote-control camera so we had to go back and reshoot it. I remember Marc [Forster] approaching Freddie and saying, "I'm really sorry, but I think we have to do this again. Is it OK?" Freddie was really happy. He said, "Great, I don't think I did it so good first time." But doing a scene with a kid like that, you really have to try to hold back the waterworks. My job at that point was just to let Freddie do his thing, because if you start flooding a scene it becomes real messy." Said by Johnny Depp "Have you guys met Freddie yet? He's pretty impressive. The first thing that struck me about Freddie when I met him on Finding Neverland were his eyes. Not just because they're these piercing, beautiful blue eyes. It was something in that there's a purity in Freddie that is astonishing. It's mesmerizing. He's incapable of lying or telling a lie. He's just so pure. That's the first thing. And then you get to work with him see what his abilities are as an actor. He's super talented. Beyond all of the great things that Freddie is, yes, he's a great actor, he's had great success as a young actor, but it doesn't remotely interest him really. He wants to play football. He goes on vacations with his family. He's just a really normal, very well-rounded kid." Said by Johnny Depp "At the time he was actually only ten. I think Freddie Highmore is just a very gifted child. When he came to audition for me, I was just sitting there and was blown away. He embodies something very truthful. There is nothing fake about him. He projects that onto everybody that is working with him." Said by Marc Forster ('Finding Neverland' Director) "I was lucky to get Freddie. The physicality of [Charlie] was important, and I wanted Freddie to look undernourished. The grandparents are really old and they didn't have much to eat, and if a strong wind blew, Freddie might just blow away. Those were all important elements and the simplicity of that character, to me, was important. That's why I was lucky to get him because he's just got that gravity and that was really important to it." Said by Tim Burton ('CATCF' Director) "The good news was Freddie. I hadn't seen Finding Neverland, but when he walked into the room, I just knew he was right. I was glad that I hadn't seen the other movie, cause you like to have more of an instinct, and it was with that with all the kids." Said by Tim Burton ('CATCF' Director) "The minute Freddie walked into the office, I just knew that he was right." Said by Tim Burton ('CATCF' Director) "I think Freddie did a really good job playing 'Charlie'. It was quite hard to pull off a good character because it's hard not to fall into the trap of being too soppy." Said by Julia Winter "Freddie Highmore is the most magnetic person I have ever seen on camera." Said by Missi Pyle "He's capable of anything. He's really, really talented." Said by Johnny Depp "He's the kind of kid who could ask for a glass of water and break your heart!" Said by John August ('CATCF' Screenwriter) "I did a scene with Freddie and I took a candy away from him. When I had to give him this really mean line I felt bad afterwards!" Said by Annasophia Robb "He's twelve but in some ways going on, you know, older than me and in other ways still a child." Said by Helena Bonham-Carter "Charlie is very much like Freddie Highmore. He's just an angel." Said by Johnny Depp "Freddie and I worked together on 'Finding Neverland' and I was hoping that there would be some way for me to get a message to Tim just at least to say, 'You've got to meet this kid Freddie.'" Said by Johnny Depp "He's a very seasoned actor. It's not like working with a child because he has four or five films behind him. It's like working with a veteran." Said by David Kelly "He's the perfect choice for this thing (August Rush). Said by Terrence Howard "I play Freddie Highmore's grandma... I love little Freddie." Said by Mia Farrow "Initially, I wanted to cast an unknown kid in the role, so I could capture all of that emotion as it was happening in real time. I was thinking that a veteran child actor, if you know what I mean, would have all of the tricks of the trade already, and I didn't want that. Then, I met with Freddie and he had none of that. I knew he was right for the part and he is just marvellous in it." Said by Kirsten Sheridan "When Freddie came in for the first time and read the part, he just tore my heart out. I was like, 'I can't believe it, he's incredible - where does he get this from?'" Said by Marc Forster "We had to come back two weeks later. Freddie's performance so wonderful I said, 'I feel really bad'. But Freddie said to me, 'I'm glad we're coming back because I can do it better.' I was thinking, 'What can you do better? It was perfect.' We reshot it and he was even better. That last shot where he looks straight into the camera and the tear's just holding there, that was that day. And it happened naturally. He's really special." Said by Marc Forster "He's very grown up. His brain works well beyond his years. He's really a sharp guy and a sweet, pure soul. He's a real inspiration, a very well-balanced kid, got the right priorities, not wrapped up in himself, not wrapped up in ambition or showbiz, all the trappings of this industry. He's interested in doing his work, connecting with people, watching football and playing football." Said by Johnny Depp "He has a wonderfully sympathetic quality to his voice. He's such a clever kid." Said by Chris Weitz "If Freddie doesn't work, then the movie doesn't work. He is August Rush. We are just there to support his story. But we were fortunate because he just happens to be one of these kids who can sit in a room of adults and there is equality there. He is smart. There is a good reason why a great actor like Johnny Depp takes to this kid so much. He saw something inside him that is different from other kids, but not better or worse. He has great empathy for people, and that is very attractive both as an actor and as a human being. I think that quality makes him very watchable." Said by Joanthan Rhys Meyers |
