It's a moderately enjoyable adventure, uplifted mostly by the presence of the wonderfully expressive Freddie Highmore.

Rounding out the recipe, we get excellent performances all around, most notably Kenneth Branagh as the absent-minded Uncle Albert (he’s writing a book called “Difficult Sums For Children”); Zoë Wanamaker as Albert’s equally quirky assistant Martha; and Freddie Highmore, best known for his roles in “Finding Neverland” and the upcoming “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” Highmore has such a natural screen presence and a genuine gift for acting that he’s miles above most of the kiddie actors you find in movies these days.

The children are all delightful, with the standout being Freddie Highmore as Robert. Similar to his recent role in ‘Finding Neverland’(2004), Highmore brings such a breath of fresh air to every scene and is a pleasure to watch – his enthusiasm in his role is also very contagious. As Robert, it is his steadfast belief in magic and the power of his faith that he insists is what is essential to the siblings maintaining hope for the future.
